Dam Failure

If you live downstream from a dam:

  • Stay alert and listen to local radio and television broadcasts for potential danger during periods of heavy rainfall.
  • Learn the evacuation routes and create a plan for your family to include a secondary meeting place should you become separated.
  • Keep a NOAA weather radio with you at all times.
  • Maintain your family preparedness portable kit for quick evacuation, should you learn of an imminent failure.
  • If you are staying in a recreational facility or campground, stay in contact with the camp manager or contact the local Office of Emergency Management to determine the best course of action for you and your family. If you are instructed to leave, do so at once.
  • Always move to higher ground away from rivers, streams, creeks, and storm drains.
