• Know if you are at risk of danger.
  • Be familiar with your community warning system and evacuation routes.
  • Plan to evacuate quickly and take your family preparedness portable kit with you. Make sure your kit includes a first-aid kit, protective clothing, dust mask, goggles, and sturdy shoes.
  • If you are unable to evacuate, protect yourself from falling ash by remaining indoors with all doors, windows and ventilation systems (i.e. air conditioner and furnace) closed or off until the ash settles.
  • If trapped outdoors during an eruption, shield your head and cover your nose and mouth with clothing to protect from ash.
  • After an eruption, avoid driving if at all possible; ash will clog engines and stall vehicles.
  • Avoid contact with any amount of ash if you have respiratory ailments.
  • Follow the instructions of local emergency officials.
